Situated in southern Italy in the region of Basilicata, Matera is one of the most fascinating towns I have visited so far. If you haven’t visited this place yet, I advise you to do it because this town is definitely worth experiencing. The most interesting aspects that I would point out about Matera are the following:

<ins class="adsbygoogle"

     data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

1. Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the world. The sassi di Matera are considered to be the first human settlements in Italy because this ancient town dates back to the Paleolithic period.

2. Matera is situated in a beautiful canyon, at the edge of a ravine. The canyon is carved out by the Gravina River and displays a wild and beautiful scenery. You can admire the beauty of the canyon but make sure that you will be wearing the proper shoes.

3. The narrow streets and the crooked paths make Matera look as if it were a labyrinth built in a pyramidal system. This scenery is something you haven’t seen before.

4. There are about 150 Rupestrian churches in Matera. These Rupestrian churches and the ancient dwellings carved into stones blend together in a harmonious way. You should know that the first churches date back to the High Middle Ages.

5. The Province of Matera has many natural wildlife reserves, parks and protected areas that preserve a unique habitat. The most famous are: The Natural Reserve of Bosco Pantano, The Natural Reserve of Policoro, The Natural Park of Gallipoli and The Natural Reserve of San Giuliano. These parks are a real paradise for animal lovers and bird watchers. All these nature reserves host a huge variety of bird and mammal species, but also a beautiful and rich local flora. This is the reason why Matera is a perfect destination for trekking, cycling or riding.

6. The fact that Matera is located near the coast of the Ionian Sea makes it a good choice for a perfect seaside holiday. There are actually three important seaside resorts in the Province of Matera: Policoro, Metaponto and Pisticci.

7. The charming and unusual setting of Matera makes it a perfect backdrop for many movies. Over thirty movies have been filmed in Matera. The most famous movies filmed in this town are: Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The gospel according to Saint Mattew, Bruce Bereford’s King David, Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, Abel Ferrara’s Mary and Catherine Hardwicke’s The Nativity Story.

8. It is said that Matera was considered the shame of Italy because of the people’s poor living conditions. It is unbelievable that there was a place in Italy where the residents lived in caves without electricity or running water until the 1950’s. This place was Matera.

9. Matera has recently been elected the European Capital of Culture for 2019. The reason for this decision is pretty obvious. This town is a real example of the blend between culture, history and traditions.

10. Matera is the first town in southern Italy which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The town represents an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement.
Its primitive and mysterious atmosphere makes Matera one of those places that you should definitely add on your trip list.

The most interesting and challenging places are in my opinion the ones shrouded in mystery. These places will stay in your memory forever. Matera is definitely one of a kind. Famous for the uniqueness and the beauty of its ancient town, Matera is an absolutely fascinating place.

Situated in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy, this town looks actually like a fortress bordered by a beautiful canyon. Matera is divided into two completely different areas: the ancient town and the modern area. The ancient town, Sassi di Matera which means the stones of Matera, is the outstanding part of the town because it hosts a series of caves carved in limestone.

These caves are actually ancient dwellings and it is said that the Sassi are some of the first human settlements in Italy. This is the reason why Matera is considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the world. Its mystery is even greater as this town dates back to the Paleolithic period.

The caves were inhabited for a long period until all the inhabitants were moved to new buildings in the modern area of the city. This statutory decision was taken because of the poor living conditions. Even if after a while many of these caves were renovated and became comfortable houses, hotels and restaurants, the atmosphere of this city is the same. The really unique and impressive scenery is still shrouded in mystery.

The primitive and grey houses give you the feeling that time has stopped in Matera. The contrast between the modern area of the town and the ancient one makes Matera a fascinating place. The modern area displays modern and elegant buildings, but once you get to the ancient side of the town, you will get the feeling that you have another world in front of your eyes.

You will be surrounded by a multitude of houses that seem to be crammed together in a very small place. The ancient caves were actually embellished with facades that bear a resemblance to normal houses. The grey color of the buildings is what gives that mysterious touch to the entire place. The narrow streets of Matera give you the feeling that you are walking a labyrinth. When you reach the edge of the ravine and you look up towards the town, you will have the impression that a deserted settlement is lying in front of your eyes.

The famous districts of Matera, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, host the most interesting places that you should definitely not miss: the Cathedral of Matera, Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, Casa Grotta del Barisano, the Church of San Pietro Barisano and the Church of San Pietro Caveoso. You can also find a variety of Rupestrian churches and museums there.

It will be a lovely experience to plunge into this historical and spectacular setting and find out a lot of interesting things about how people used to live. Matera became a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the fact that it represents an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement.

You should know that the town is very close to Bari, which is an excellent and cheap destination. It is cheaper to stay in Bari than to book a room in Matera. If you choose to stay in Bari it will be very easy to visit other Italian towns which are situated in the same area. There are quite a few interesting towns and villages that deserve to be visited. You can take the train from Bari to Matera or drive about 70 km. Matera is in my opinion a fascinating town and it is definitely worth experiencing.
